Abbey of Melk
Splendid baroque abbey of the Benedictine monks in an impressive location. The monastic library and the marble hall with frescoes by Paul Trogers are world famous. Also worth seeing are the abbey church with the cupola, and the abbey museum with multimedia information.
Göttweig Abbey
Baroque abbey of the Benedictine monks, also known as the “Austrian Montecassino” on account of its fantastic location. Simply impressive are: the monumental Kaiserstiege, Paul Trogers’ frescoes, the abbey church and the museum in the imperial wing or Kaisertrakt.
Abbey church of Dürnstein
Inhabited by the Austin Canons since 1410, and expanded into a gothic monastery complex in the 15th century, and touched by baroque 300 years later. Famous monuments: the bluish white tower of the abbey church, which has been restored in its original colouring.
Basilica of Maria Taferl
Important church of pilgrimage. The treasure chamber or imperial treasury, and the mechanical crib, a work of art with more than 300 figures, are impressive. The interiors have fascinating baroque ornamentation in gold and silver.
