Wine Styles
STEINFEDER, FEDERSPIEL, SMARAGD
Three world-renowned wine styles,
that reflect the unique flavor profile and diversity of the Wachau.
They provide clear guidance based on the ripeness and complexity of the wines, and indicate their ideal use.
Fragrant and lightWines labeled Steinfeder offer
fresh, pure drinking pleasure with up to 11.5% ABV.
Their name is derived from the Steinfeder grass, which grows on the steep, rocky terraces of the Wachau.
It is as light as a feather – just like the wines.
Rich in nuance and strong in characterFederspiel wines showcase all facets of their special origins.
Always balancing elegance and depth, they are versatile and, with up to 12.5% ABV, ideal food accompaniments. The name goes back to falconry: the "Federspiel" was used to bring the falcons back.
Complex and long-lastingThe grapes for Smaragd wines remain on the vine longer.
They thus form the basis for particularly complex, structured, and powerful wines without oak influence starting at 12.5% ABV. Their aging potential is promising.
The dry stone walls that characterize the landscape of the Wachau
are the habitat of their namesake, the magnificent emerald lizard.
